Women Inspiring Women During An Unexpected Year

Last year came with many unexpected challenges. As the country became on lockdown, I found myself abruptly moving out of my San Francisco apartment and saying goodbye to my college friends.

With less than two months until my college graduation, I was crushed. We swapped out in person gatherings and celebrations for scheduled Zoom meetings and an online graduation.

During this time I found it easy to binge watch the latest Netflix releases and scroll endlessly through Instagram and TikTok. Who didn’t? On top of that, I was applying to jobs left and right during the worst time to enter the job market. Resume after resume and interview after interview left me feeling defeated and unmotivated.

But after time during this slump, I realized how important it was to be truly self motivated and resilient. I made serious efforts to prioritize myself and focus on what opportunities could come from having so much free time.

My time spent online shifted more towards family time, exercise and walks. As outdoor activities opened up again I began spending a lot of time playing tennis and golf. Both were sports I grew up playing but never had the time to take seriously. As I developed a newfound love for these sports, I also discovered an opportunity to merge two of my passions - golf and fashion.

During challenging times, you have to make the best out of the situation. Find a positive out every negative. Can you think of a time where you were in a negative situation and made the best out of the situation?

As a young woman in the beginning stages of beginning her career, it is challenging to stay positive.

But through the power of others, like Kelly Rowland, I am inspired to keep going. Women inspiring women is what she represents by following her own dream to create her own fashion line and inspiring other women to do the same.

 Kelly Rowland Inspiring Women

As an American singer she has stepped out of her comfort zone to enter the world of fashion and has inspired me to do the same. Kelly Rowland’s line includes apparel and shoes.

She will be releasing three capsules, each themed with a different muse from greek mythology. For example, April is themed Greek Goddesses of warriors, May is Greek Goddesses of creativity, and June is Greek Goddess of grace.

Rowland’s themes about the goddesses symbolize women around the world. It's the epitome of women inspiring women.

Women will be able to connect with Rowlands line and feel inspired. Wherever I go, whatever challenge is presented to me I will include grace, strength and creativity into my thinking.

I am now inspired to share with you my dream.

My Dream

My dream is to create my own line of golf apparel for women.

As a young golfer who loves fashion and feeling confident, I find a major gap in women's golf wear. I dread picking out my golf outfits before golf and avoid seeing people. I do not feel confident or sexy. I want to wear an outfit that I feel comfortable in so I am able to walk onto that course and swing my clubs in full confidence.

I want to make women feel confident in themselves and in winning the game. Clothing is a huge part of that.

Waking up and getting mentally prepared for a round of golf includes choosing an outfit to wear. My line will be bold and creative. Confidence is what it is all about.

Be confident in yourself and in the game.

A sports and fashion icon of the world is Serena Williams. Williams always looks so tennis chic. Her high-end, one of a kind fashion outfits have inspired millions who watch her be strong, more assertive, and more confident.

I can imagine a golf line, which is the embodiment of elegance, beauty and poise as Kelly Rowland said was an important part of her line.

These two strong women, Kelly Rowland and Serena Williams, have inspired me to follow my own dream. I hope to inspire other women to do the same and join the women inspiring women movement.

After talking about what inspired me and who inspired me to follow a dream of mine to create golf apparel for women, I wanted to hear other stories from women in my life. I decided to reach out to my friends. Here's what they said.

Stories of Women Inspiring Women

I asked, who is a woman who has inspired you over the past year, if so what did she inspire you to do?

Here are some of their responses:

“My mom has inspired me - she always does. But in the past year I’ve grown to appreciate her sacrifice more than I have because I’ve been living at home and seeing it up close, day in and day out. And somehow, she remains graceful in thought and practice” (Leah).

“My mom is beyond a role model after seeing firsthand the superpowers she upholds in the kind acts she performs daily. She inspires me to stay level headed during the lowest of points, optimistic during the darkest times, and kind even in times when you think the world is out to get you. She has inspired me to see beyond what is going on solely in my life and to connect to others, see beyond borders and through the lens of other perspectives. She has taught me to be selfless” (Isabella).

“I guess specifically during the pandemic, I’ve been inspired by my peers. All being recent college grads, I feel inspired by how everyone has chosen their own path and really stepped out of their comfort zone and taken their future into their own hands and in their own direction. Simultaneously, I feel very encouraged and lifted up by these women. Both to see them as role models and also being motivated / encouraged by them to hustle and choose what’s best for me. It could be easy to be jealous by other people having it “better” or more figured out, but I feel inspired and like they want to help me get to where I want to be” (Jennifer).

“My sister who is a mother of three has been managing an online school for them, while adjusting to online nursing school herself. Her commitment and drive to her children and her own education during this time has really inspired me. She adjusted to the pandemic with ease. Watching her has shown me that life doesn’t stop for the pandemic and all we can do is adapt and carry on, which was not easy for me in the beginning of the pandemic” (Juliana).

Your Turn

I hope these stories inspired you.

Now think…….

Who inspires you?

What is YOUR dream and what can you do to make a move closer to it?
