how to make a marketing portfolio

At its core, a digital marketing portfolio is a compilation of your best work: the projects that exemplify your qualifications, training and experience.

For aspiring marketing professionals, a digital marketing portfolio can help show employers that even though you may not have years of experience, you're capable of performing at high level.

Every applicant has a resume, but not every applicant has a marketing portfolio.

Here’s everything you need to know about how to make a marketing portfolio even when you may not have a ton of experience to put on there yet.

We’ve also gathered examples of website portfolios created by Sky Accelerator graduates that you can use as inspiration.

Step 1: Choose a Platform to Build Your Marketing Portfolio

Our favorites from least expensive to most include Wordpress, Wix, and Squarespace.

These are our favorites because they only cost from $0-$25 per month and are easy to learn how to use.

Don't be afraid to try them all with a free trial to see which one you like the best.

Step 2: Choose a Layout

In marketing, the way you choose to design your portfolio matters. It's the first impression employers will get and you want to make it a good one.

Opt for something simple, modern and visual. Your homepage shouldn't have much text.

Look for a layout that also has clear navigation so it's easy for people to browse and engage with your site.

Step 3: Add pages

At the bare minimum, we recommend you include a home, about, and projects page to your marketing portfolio.

Those are the essentials to any website portfolio We've also included a list of other types of pages you can add to your marketing portfolio to get your creative gears turning:

Home Page:

Overview of the contents of your portfolio. You may include:

  • Highlights from your career and persona life
  • Photo of yourself
  • Testimonials

About Page:

Personal info about you. You may include:

  • Photos of yourself
  • Personal details about your interests
  • Links to your Spotify playlists or social media accounts
  • Brief bio about who you are
  • Contact information such as email, phone, and LinkedIn
  • Link to your resume

Projects Page:

Example work from your past jobs. You may include:

  • Examples of previous projects segmented by company
  • Photos and screenshots of results from those projects

Blog:

Write what you're passionate about. You may include:

  • Articles about trending marketing topics to demonstrate your industry knowledge
  • Articles about brands you love to demonstrate your passion
  • Articles analyzing marketing campaigns to demonstrate your work abilities

If you don't have a ton of experience to put on your marketing portfolio, creating a blog is a great way to show your passion and talent for marketing.

Good marketers are first and foremost good writers and employers will appreciate you taking the initiative to create your own blog.

Mood Board:

Show off your style. You may include:

  • Video mood board wit pictures, video, and music
  • Collage mood board that you create in Canva or Adobe Photoshop
  • Embed a Pinterest board

Sample Work:

Personal projects that showcase your skills.  You may include:

  • Graphic designs, photos, or videos you created for fun
  • Create content for brands as if you were their social media or content manager
  • Do projects for brands you would imagine doing in a marketing coordinator role

This is another great way to showcase your talent in the absence of real-world experience. Do "pretend" projects for real companies to demonstrate how you would operate in an entry-level marketing role.

Step 4: Get Creative

Your marketing portfolio is your chance to differentiate yourself from large applicant pools. Take risks, get creative, and add personal touches that highlight what's unique about you. Here are two examples from Sky Accelerator graduates:

Conclusion

Building your own marketing portfolio from scratch takes a lot of work, but in the long run can help you go further in your career.

Make it authentically your own and don't be afraid to show off your style, passions, and everything that makes you unique.
